Which pets need to be sponsored??
When someone is picking an animal to sponsor, we try to steer them towards ones who might ordinarily be overlooked. We have a saying at the shelter that the last ones to be adopted are always "bullies, Beagles, and black dogs" and that tends to be true.
Pit Bulls ("Bullies") are often some of the sweetest, smartest, and most loving dogs at the shelter. However, there are very few people who even consider adopting them because of old fashioned stereotypes.
Beagles tend to be GREAT family dogs and everyone loves them...the only problem is that we have SO MANY of them! At any given time we usually have between 15 and 20 Beagles up for adoption, and people don't always see how special they are when there are so many who look so much alike.
Black dogs probably have the hardest time of any. No one really understands why, but if you put a yellow, brown, and black dog in a kennel together the black dog is almost ALWAYS last to be adopted. Maybe it's because they just don't stand out as much...maybe it's because there are a lot of others who look similar. Either way, sponsoring a big black dog is never a bad thing.
Then there are the "special needs" babies....the cat with no teeth, the blind Coon hound, the Boxer with mange. These might seem like more obvious candidates but are nonetheless deserving.
You can't make a wrong decision in sponsoring a pet. No matter what, you are taking ONE MORE obstacle out of the way of someone who is considering adoption!
