September to Remember

Roadie's Story
Cassie, one of our adoption counselors and vet techs, couldn’t resist a challenge when Road Runner, a clever stray that could’ve been named Noah Lyles for his sprinting prowess, kept evading all of our efforts to catch him and shower him with the love and care that every animal deserves. Once we finally caught him, Cassie made it her personal mission to win him over and find him the perfect home—even considering if that home might be hers! Through patience and persistence, Road Runner came around, leading to happier, healthier days and becoming yet another beloved BGWCHS alum.

"On April 10th, 2023, it was a normal hectic day at work.  I was sitting down on my lunch break eating when I looked out the window and saw the cutest little brindle dog with a limp walking around outside off-leash. As I went outside to tell the people who were bringing him in to put a leash on him, he darted. Before we could close our gates, he had already crossed Louisville Road and taken off. Despite our efforts to get him to come to us, he was far too scared to come close. We had several sightings of him over the next few days, but we were still unable to catch him. As we were leaving work on the 12th, we saw him walking towards our gate, but again he darted and would not come close to us. That night we sat a trap outside our gate hoping he would go in overnight. I got to work early the next morning, April 13th, just so I could check the trap and see if he had gone in it overnight, and to our surprise, there he sat. He greeted us by showing his teeth and growling out of fear. I made it my mission to show him that not every human was bad and that we were there to help him. I sat down on the floor with him and fed him my entire breakfast, and I still wasn’t trusted. I went into his room and sat on the ground every once in a while with some treats until he finally gave in. By that afternoon, he was sitting in my lap, kissing me in the face, and his tail would not stop wagging.

He still had the same limp that he had whenever I first saw him coming through the doors, so when he was comfortable enough, that’s when we went forward with figuring out what was wrong with his leg. We sent him to the vet for x-rays to find out that he had an old injury to the back left femur and it was dislocated at the hip. His next step was FHO surgery & while we were waiting on that surgery, he came down with kennel cough so the surgery had to be postponed. We finally got him scheduled for surgery on May 5th at a local vet’s office. We knew this baby was going to be available for adoption shortly after he healed from his surgery, only to run into another problem. We noticed that he was still not putting any weight on his leg and unfortunately, the first surgery was unsuccessful. As much as we wanted to save his leg, our next option was amputation. On May 26th, he had surgery to amputate his leg. A few days after his leg amputation, we could see such a difference in his temperament. He was so happy and no longer in pain, so we made it our mission to find him the absolute best home.

Roadie sat and watched dogs come in and out every single day and wondered why he hadn’t been chosen yet…who doesn’t love a tripod? Finally, on June 19th, his person came along and he was able to get out of the shelter into his forever home, or so we thought. A few months had passed and Roadie started developing some behavioral issues. His adopter loved him so much, but their situation just wasn’t working. So she brought him back and forth to the shelter for several months, taking him home at night with her and bringing him to a kennel during the day, to try to find him a new home. Unfortunately, Roadie had the same problem he had before and watched dogs go in and out and he was left sitting in the kennel praying for his forever home to come around. He started going kennel crazy. He was depressed, wasn’t acting like himself, wasn’t happy to see us in the morning anymore, and he sat in the back of his kennel every day. We were all so confused as to why this baby hadn’t found his forever home yet. It was so sad watching him go downhill every day.

Finally, on July 5th, 2024, Roadie found his forever home. His adopters were from out of county and had been watching him on the site for weeks. They had their eyes on him but couldn’t make the drive to our shelter. They finally came in and to their surprise, he was still there waiting for them. We saw Roadie light up, he was wagging his tail and kissing all over them. He knew these were the people he had been waiting on all this time. We have been getting updates on Roadie and he is thriving in his new home.

Some dogs are with us for one day, some dogs are with us for one year. Regardless of their length of stay, it is our mission every day to find them all the best homes.”

-Cassie Japp, BGWCHS Adoption Counselor and Vet Tech

for 3x the Impact on Pets like Roadie

Roadie's story is part of our September to Remember campaign. We’re on a mission to raise $40k this September to unlock a matching donation from our friends Stan and Susan Mathews. Thanks to them, every $10 you donate turns into $30. Whatever amount you can spare today, big or small, will make a difference for shelter pets!
"There are many worthy causes that don't have all the resources to accomplish all they want to do. We support the shelter because they make such a difference in our community. The innovations introduced by Lorri as director, the love and caring shown by the staff and volunteers, and the innocent lives saved are sufficient to inspire our donations."
